SELFLESS: describes one who is more concerned with addressing the needs of others than their own
By 2014, Bill Gates had already donated $28B to philanthropic efforts through his foundation, at least $10B of which went to vaccine research. At the same time, he was valued at around $72B, meaning that he had given about 25% of his total net worth to charity. Under Gates's supervision in 1998, Microsoft gave 49 computers to a low-income school in Palo Alto, and a couple years earlier he donated $8M to Stanford for a new computer science centre.
Bill Gates is easily one of the richest people in the world, and he has been for much of the past decade. Most people would use this purely to their own advantage, living in luxury for the rest of their lives. Gates, however, has committed to giving 95% of his net worth away before his time is up, proving once and for all that he is an outlier amongst men, willing to take leaps and strides to benefit the people of the world around him.
