ACTIVELY INVOLVED: DESCRIBES AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF A COMMUNITY WHO CONTRIBUTES in their own right as well as inspiring others to do the same
Through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has put millions of dollars into creating vaccination programs in less privileged parts of the world. Estimates say that this initiative could save "thousands, if not millions, of lives over the next several decades." In reaction to this program, he was ridiculed by the anti-vaccine movement. Instead of simply ignoring the complaints, Gates publicly responded in support of vaccines, stating that the purported link between vaccines and autism is a "complete lie."
Outside of just charity and philanthropy, Gates has remained incredibly involved with and relevant to Microsoft, the corporation he helped to build, even after retiring from his position as Chief Software Architect in 2008 (and thereby ending his day-to-day involvement in the company). In an interview, he said that he still spends a third of his time working at Microsoft. When Satya Nadella took up the role of CEO in early 2014, Microsoft announced that Gates would "devote more time to the company, supporting Nadella in shaping technology and product direction." Bill Gates puts work into many, many projects, actively contributing his efforts despite the fact that he no longer has any monetary need.
